After helping people through the UK driving licence process for more than 7 years, one of the most common questions I receive is:
“What will the examiner ask me during my driving test?”
Many learners become nervous because they imagine the examiner will ask difficult questions or try to catch them out.
The reality is different.
The UK practical driving test is not designed to trick you. The examiner wants to check that you understand how to drive safely, control the vehicle properly, and make good decisions on the road.
However, knowing what to expect before your test can make a huge difference to your confidence.
I always tell my clients: the more familiar you are with the process, the less nervous you will feel on the day.
During your UK driving test, the examiner will ask you some questions before you start driving, during the drive, and at the end of the test.
Questions Before You Start Driving
Before the test begins, the examiner will introduce themselves and check your details.
They will usually ask you to confirm:

They will also ask you to read a number plate from a certain distance to check your eyesight.
This is a simple check, but many learners become nervous because they do not know it is part of the process.
The “Tell Me” Vehicle Safety Question
At the beginning of your driving test, before you start driving, the examiner will ask you one vehicle safety question.
This is commonly called the “Tell Me” question because you need to explain what you would do.
The examiner is checking that you understand basic vehicle safety.
Examples of questions include:
How would you check that the brakes are working correctly before starting a journey?
A good answer would explain that you would check:
- The brakes should not feel soft or spongy
- The vehicle should not pull to one side
- There should be no unusual noises
How would you check that your headlights and tail lights are working?
You would explain that you would:
- Turn on the lights
- Check they are working correctly
- Use reflections or ask someone to help if necessary
How would you check that the tyres are safe?
You should explain checking:
- Correct tyre pressure
- No cuts or damage
- Legal tread depth
How would you know if there was a problem with the engine oil?
You would explain checking the oil level using:
- The dipstick
- The vehicle handbook instructions
These questions are not there to test your mechanical skills. The examiner simply wants to know that you understand basic vehicle safety.
The “Show Me” Question During Driving
During the driving test, the examiner will ask you one “Show Me” question while you are driving.
This means you must demonstrate something while keeping control of the car.
Examples include:
Show me how you would wash the front windscreen using the washers and wipers.
You would operate the controls safely while continuing to drive.
Show me how you would use the rear windscreen washer.
You would demonstrate the correct control without losing focus on the road.
Show me how you would demist the front windscreen.
You would explain or demonstrate the correct setting to clear the windscreen.
The important thing is not to panic.
I have seen learners become so focused on answering the question that they forget they are driving.
Remember: your safety and control of the vehicle always come first.
Questions During Independent Driving
During your test, the examiner will also give you instructions.
They may say things like:
- “Follow the road ahead unless traffic signs tell you otherwise.”
- “Turn left at the next opportunity.”
- “Turn right at the roundabout.”
- “Pull up on the left when it is safe.”
They are not testing whether you know a specific route.
They are checking whether you can listen, understand instructions, and make safe decisions.
Will the Examiner Ask Trick Questions?
This is something many learners worry about.
The answer is no.
The examiner is not trying to confuse you.
However, you must pay attention because sometimes instructions require you to make your own safe decision.
For example, if the examiner says:
“Take the next road on the left.”
If the road is unsafe or there is no legal place to turn, you should not make a dangerous decision just to follow the instruction.
Safety always comes first.
Common Mistakes I See With These Questions
From my experience helping learners, these are some common mistakes:
They Memorise Answers Without Understanding Them
Some learners try to memorise sentences word-for-word.
This creates problems because if they forget one word, they panic.
It is better to understand what you are explaining.
They Forget They Are Still Driving
During the “Show Me” question, some learners focus completely on the button or control they need to use.
They forget:
- Checking mirrors
- Maintaining speed
- Looking at the road
The vehicle controls are important, but driving safely is the priority.
They Panic Because They Do Not Understand English Instructions
This is especially common with foreign drivers.
Many people I help already know how to drive, but they struggle with understanding the wording used during tests and lessons.
The solution is preparation.
Learning common phrases used by examiners can make the test much less stressful.

The biggest mistake people make is treating the driving test like an exam where they need to be perfect.
You do not need perfect driving.
You need safe driving.
